Preceptoring vs Mentoring
Overview
The terms preceptoring and mentoring do not have consistent
meanings and are sometimes used interchangeably. For the purposes
of this document, operational definitions and a continuum between
preceptoring and mentoring are provided to allow the reader to navigate
the document, and also to clarify that these terms differ conceptually
in several aspects. This section compares preceptoring, mentoring
and related "teaching roles," and highlights some similarities
and differences in these important roles.
Readers are encouraged to apply the concepts and principles
contained in this document to the terms they choose that reflect
the roles enacted, desired outcomes, professional and practice context
and culture, type of organization and organizational culture.
This material is presented as an interpretation of
the preceptor and mentor process based on information obtained from
organizations that have implemented preceptoring and mentoring programs,
literature review, and the expertise and experiences of a resource
team of experts. Although designed to be of general application,
not all material will be relevant in every situation. Each situation
must be individually assessed based on individual knowledge, program
and organizational requirements.
