For Mentors

Preceptoring vs Mentoring

Overview

The terms preceptoring and mentoring do not have consistent meanings and are sometimes used interchangeably. For the purposes of this document, operational definitions and a continuum between preceptoring and mentoring are provided to allow the reader to navigate the document, and also to clarify that these terms differ conceptually in several aspects. This section compares preceptoring, mentoring and related "teaching roles," and highlights some similarities and differences in these important roles.

Readers are encouraged to apply the concepts and principles contained in this document to the terms they choose that reflect the roles enacted, desired outcomes, professional and practice context and culture, type of organization and organizational culture.

This material is presented as an interpretation of the preceptor and mentor process based on information obtained from organizations that have implemented preceptoring and mentoring programs, literature review, and the expertise and experiences of a resource team of experts. Although designed to be of general application, not all material will be relevant in every situation. Each situation must be individually assessed based on individual knowledge, program and organizational requirements.
